On Tyne Cot Cemetery and Memorial, Zonnebeke is the name of 51651 Private James Hall serving with the Manchester Regiment who died 24/10/1917.

Pauline Priano has submitted the following:-

James Hall was born 1897 at Waterworks, Murton, County Durham, one of 5 children of whom only 3 survived, James and his 2 younger sisters Mary and Margaret, born to Patrick Hall 1880 of Tow Law and his wife Elizabeth Spooner born 1879 at Haswell, both in County Durham. His father was employed as a coal miner-hewer, in 1911 they were living at 10, Hesledon Terrace, Waterworks, Murton Colliery. James now 13 is not listed under any employment or indeed as a scholar, to supplement the family income they had taken in two boarders, brothers William and George Suggett, also employed at the colliery. His mother’s sister also lived with them.

James enlisted at Seaham Harbour and was first assigned as Private 40448 to the Durham Light Infantry, Battalion unknown and later transferred to the 21st Battalion Manchester Regiment. He would have been sent to the front as soon as he turned 19, during 1916. The 21st Battalion was attached to the 7th Division which fought extensively on the Western Front in 1916 at the Battles of the Somme and 1917 during the German retreat to the Hindenburg line at Arras, France and the phases of the Third Battle of Ypres, in Belgium.

Private 51651 James Hall Manchester Regiment went missing between October 24th-27th 1917 and was officially declared to have died in action October 24th 1917. His name is commemorated at Tyne Cot Cemetery and Memorial, Zonnebeke, near Ypres in Belgium, panel 120-124. James has no known grave, he was 20 years old and single.

His father Patrick received all monies due to him and his awards of the British War Medal and Victory Medal.
