The son of Richard and Emily Shields of 12 Victoria Avenue, Stockton-on-Tees he was born at Stockton. A Marine Engineer and Draughtsman residing at 19 Southsea Avenue, Leigh-on-Sea he enlisted at Warley, Essex. He was killed in action on the 24th May 1918 aged 39. He is Remembered on the Pozieres Memorial, Somme, France, Panel 28 and 29. His name appears in the Book of Remembrance in Stockton Parish Church.
