William Kirby has submitted the following:-

Richard Howe was born in 1887 at The Huts, Hesleden.

When he enlisted on the 4th January 1915 at West Hartlepool his sister Mary Jane Johnson of 26 Steel's Yard, Low Chare, Chester-le-Street was his next of kin. He embarked for France 11th September 1915.

Richard was discharged 30th August 1916 at Ballyvonare being no longer physically fit for War Service. He was awarded the Silver War Badge.

Richard died 29th of October 1917 aged 39 years and is buried at Ropery Lane. His niece Louvaine Johnson who died aged 1¾ years in December 1919 is buried with him.

Recipient of the 1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.
