In Watou Churchyard is the Commonwealth War Grave for 24314 Private William John Brown, serving with the 10th Battalion (Service) Durham Light Infantry who died 24/08/1915.

William John Brown was born at Bishop Auckland, Durham, on the 22nd March 1883, and was the son of William Brown, (47 Wolseley Street, Teams), and his wife Elizabeth Alice, daughter of William John Patten, and brother to Private Edward Brown.

He was educated at Bishop Auckland and was a Miner.

William married at Gateshead on the 24th June Emmaline, daughter of Chemison Burdon, and had one child Emmaline, born 5th December 1913.

He enlisted on the 9th August 1914 and served with the British Expeditionary Force in France from May 1915. He died on the 24th August 1915 whilst on active service.
