Thomas was the son of John and Elizabeth Kay. He was born at Bearpark Durham (c) 1884. The couple had 7 children but only 4 survived. His siblings were William, John, Elizabeth, Jennie, Ethel, and Fred. Like his father Thomas worked as a coal hewer. His brother, Thomas was also in the pit but as a driver.
Thomas enlisted at North Shields and was killed shortly before the Battle of the Somme at the end of June 1916 aged 27 years.
He is buried at Becourt Military Cemetery, Becordel-Becourt in France.
