On Ploegsteert Memorial is the name of 99082 Lance Corporal Alexander Weallens serving with Machine Gun Corps (Infantry) who died 12/04/1918.

Alexander was born at Durham (c) 1890 to his parents Joseph and Sarah (nee Lilley). Both parents predeceased him.

The 1891 census shows the family living at Ravensworth where his father was gamekeeper.

His siblings were Joseph, Isabella, Sarah, Elizabeth, Francis, Alexander, Jessie and Mary.

By 1901 his father (aged 60) had retired. He later that same year then his mother died 1910.

In 1911 Alexander was living with his sisters Sarah ( a clerk for Jones Sewing Machine Co) and Jessie (a domestic servant). Alexander was employed as a butcher.

He enlisted at Birtley but the date is unknown.

He married Dorothy Ann Marshall on 3 January 1916. They went on to have twin boys, Joseph and Alexander who were born in 1917.

Alexander died 12 April 1918 aged 28 years at Ploegsteert, Belgium and his name is listed on the Memorial there.

The surname is sometimes recorded as Wealleans.

Alexander Weallens is remembered at Low Fell on L61.05 and as Wealleans (this spelling of surname also on CWGC) at Gateshead on G39.064
