LOW FELL

Veitch, W., Pte., 1916
On Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme is the name of G/16688 Private Walter Veitch serving with 2nd Battalion London Regiment Royal Fusiliers who died 03/07/1916.

Brenda Mcmahon submitted the following :-

Walter Veitch was born to his parents Alexander and Margaret (c) 1897 at Sheriff Hill. His father was a coachman. Both parents came from Scotland.

The couple had 12 children who all survived. They included Alexander, Agnes, Lizzie, Thomas, Kate, John, Emily, Violet, and James.

Walter and at least 2 of his brothers worked in the coal mines. At 14 Walter had a job as a coal driver below ground.

He enlisted into the army at Durham. He was later killed in action about 3 July 1916 aged 19 years on the Somme. His brother,James, was also killed in action. He died in the same area, Somme, August 1916 only a few weeks after Walter.

Walter Veitch is remembered at Low Fell on L61.02 L61.03 L61.05and L61.10 and at Gateshead on G39.004
