Elliott, R.C., Cpl., 1918
On Pozieres Memorial is the name of 750359 Corporal Richard Crowe Elliott serving with C Battery 290 Brigade Royal Field Artillery who died 01/05/1918.

Richard was born at Gateshead early in 1884 to William and Jane Elliott. His father was a police constable who was later promoted to sergeant then by 1911 to inspector. The couple had 7 children all of whom survived. They were Richard, James, Mary, Elizabeth, Margaret, Mabel and William.

By 1901 Richard was an apprentice iron moulder. He later became a coal hewer.

He married Elizabeth in 1907. In 1911 they had 2 children William and Margaret. The family lived together in 1 room accommodation on Belle Vue Bank in Low Fell.

Richard joined the army and was promoted to the rank of Corporal. He was killed in action 1 May 1918 aged 34 years and is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial.The Memorial commemorated over 14 000 UK and 30 South African men who have no known grave who died on the Somme between March – August 1918. Royal Field Artillery shows approximately 400 names.
