On the Ploegsteert Memorial is the name of 46204 Private John Dellow serving with the 12th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment who died 11/04/1918.

Brenda McMahon submitted the following :-

John was born at Gateshead in 1879 to his parents Thomas and Agnes (nee Wells). He had several brothers and sisters.

His father was a house and church painter who employed others. His older brother, Thomas and John himself were both painters/paper hangers like their father. His younger brother, James was a dentist.

On 1881 census father, Thomas is also shown as a sailmaker.

John Dellow enlisted at Gateshead into the army.

He married Eleanor Mary Robinson and had two children, Constance and Leslie.

Son of Thomas and Agnes Dellow, of 35, Victoria Terrace, Low Fell, Gateshead; husband of Eleanor Mary Dellow, of 77, Inskip Terrace, Gateshead.

John was killed in action on the 11th April 1918 aged 38 years.

NB. John has been entered as John Dellon into several records. This is incorrect.

John Dellow is remembered at Low Fell on L61.05 and at Gateshead in G39.004
