Brenda McMahon has submitted the following :-

John Clarkson was born at Felling (c) 1884. He was the eldest son of Jane. His siblings were Mary, Ellen (dry plate-works machinist), Matthew (aged 15 coal screener).

John himself also worked in the pit as a coal miner putter.

He married Ethel Maud Wharton in the summer of 1910. They had a daughter, also named Ethel.

John enlisted at Newcastle. He served with the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers (service no 23830) but later was transferred to Royal Irish Fusiliers. He was with the R.I.F. when he died at home in September 1916 aged 32 years.

Ethel Maud, his wife remarried in 1920 William J. Brown.

John Clarkson is remembered at Low Fell on L61.05 and at Gateshead in G39.004 page 87
