LOW FELL

Carthew, W., L/Sergt., 1915
On the Helles Memorial is the name of 11340 Lance Sergeant William Carthew serving with the 9th (Service) Battalion, The Prince of Wales's Own, (West Yorkshire Regiment) who died 15/08/1915.

William was born at Moorsley, Durham on 30 June 1895. His father was John (coal miner) and his mother Elizabeth (nee Williams) who both originated from Cornwall. His parents married in 1880 going on to have several children including Annie, John Thomas, Emma James and William.

His father died in 1897 at the age of only 43 years. William was a youngster of 2 at the time.

William was educated at Southwick-on-Wear, Boldon Colliery and Low Fell.

In 1911 William, born 1896 and his brother James born 1891 are living at 13 Wesley Terrace Low Fell with their sister and brother in law Robert and Annie Wilson. They are both working as Coal Miner Putters.

William enlisted on the 26th August 1914, and was sent to the Dardanelles on the 1st July 1915. He was killed in action at Sulva Bay on the 15th August 1915.
