Pegg, C., Pte., 1917
On the Arras Memorial is the name of PO/249 Private Charles Pegg, serving with the Royal Marine Light Infantry who died 28/04/1917.

Charles Pegg was born on 28th March 1893, the second of eight children of Samuel and Elizabeth Ann Pegg of 9 Hunters Square, Wrekenton, later 9 Ship Lane, Wrekenton. In 1911 Charles and his elder brother, James, were coal putters, while their father was a hewer. Two of his brothers, Robert and George are also remembered on the memorial in St. Thomas Church.

He enlisted as a Private with 2nd Battalion, Royal Marines, number Po/249 (S), on a short service attestation on 20th October 1914. He died on the Western Front on 28th April 1917. However one source records him as killed in action, another as missing, presumed killed. His name is on the Arras Memorial in Pas-de-Calais, France, and he is also remembered with a photograph on the Gateshead War Honours Scrapbook, although the caption on the cutting reads merely “wounded”.
