Richard Airey was born in 1893, the son of Joseph and Marion Airey of 9 Oliver Crescent, Birtley. He was the older brother of Alexander who is also remembered on the memorial. The family were originally from Cumberland where Joseph and his elder sons were farm workers.
Richard served as a Rifleman with 1st/8th Battalion, Royal Hampshire Regiment, regimental number 331559. He died in Palestine on 19th April 1917 and is commemorated on the Jerusalem Memorial. He is remembered on the Cross in St. Thomas Churchyard, but not on the Plaque in the nave.
He is remembered in Eighton Banks on E50.01
