Robert was born in about 1877, the son of Absalom and Sarah Holmes of 11 Moss Side, Wrekenton. He and his brothers followed their father into employment as coal miners. One of his brothers, William, is also remembered on the memorial. In the 1911 census the family included two other siblings and his two year old niece, Violet.
Robert enlisted in Newcastle as a Private with 20th Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers (Tyneside Scottish), regimental number 20/326. He was killed in action on the Western Front on 1st July 1916.
