EIGHTON BANKS

Greenwell, J., 2nd Lieut., 1918
On the Vis-en-Artois Memorial is the name of Second Lieutenant John Greenwell, serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers who died 24/10/1918.

John Taylor and Ann Norman have submitted the following:

John was born in about 1894, the son of Robert and Ellen Greenwell, with an elder sister and two younger brothers. In 1901 the family lived at Fell Place, Springwell Village, and his father was employed as a timekeeper on a mineral railway – probably Bowes or Pelaw Main. By 1911, the family had two further sons and John had left school and joined his father in employment at the mineral railway, working as a railway shunter. The family were living at 14 Prospect Terrace, Eighton Banks. In 1918 the family was living in 8 Hawthorn Terrace, Eighton Banks.

John served with 12-13th Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers, regimental number 20/792 being promoted to the rank of acting 2nd Lieutenant. He was killed in action on the Western Front on 24th October 1918.

John Greenwell is remembered at Eighton Banks on E50.01 and E50.02
