John George Casson was born in 1898 at Witton Park the son of John George Casson (born1875 at Witton Park and (C)Katherine Ann nee Smith (born 1880 at Durham).

In 1901 the family were at Thompson Street Witton Park and by 1911 were at Bitchburn Mill Cottage. Father John George was a Coal Miner. John George was the eldest followed by Mary Ann (1901), Thomas Albert (1903), Ellen (1905), May (1911) Elizabeth (1914) and Hodgson (1917).

John George enlisted in May 1918 aged 20 years – he was a miner. He was 5 foot and a half inch high and had a chest measurement of 33½ inches. He went to South Shields 11/06/1918 to the 3rd Battalion of the Durham Light Infantry.

On July 3rd he was admitted to Sunderland War Hospital and died there of pneumonia 05/07/1918. His family were with him when he died.

John George was buried in Escomb cemetery.
