In Tincourt New British Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 46527 Private John William Smith Bell, serving with 21st Battalion Tyneside Scottish, who died 10/09/1917.

He was born Stanley, Crook about 1898, and in both the 1901 and 1911 Census was listed as John William Smith the son of John and Sarah Elizabeth Smith.

John William enlisted in Crook.

He was formerly No. 937, serving with the Training Reserve Battalion.

John William Bell Smith is not remembered on a local War Memorial although there is a J.W.B. Smith at Stanley Crook on S147.01 however this gives his regiment as Durham Light Infantry.
