In Strand Military Cemetery Hainaut, Belgium is the Commonwealth War Grave of 10194 Private Charles William Hindmoor serving with the 2nd Battalion Durham Light Infantry who died 21/05/1915.

Pauline Priano has submitted the following:-

Charles William Hindmoor, one of 4 children of whom only 3 survived, was the eldest of 3 brothers and had an elder sister. His father Charles Hindmoor was born at Branspeth in 1837 and was married in the district of Weardale in 1875 to Hannah Gray, native of Sunderland born 1847. Their daughter Mary Ann was born at Tow Law, County Durham soon after in 1875 as was Charles William in 1878. By 1891 they were living at Front Street in the parish of North Bedburn, Charles was employed as a joiner. Their son George was born here during the 2nd quarter (Apr/May/Jun) 1881 as was Richard in 1884 and baptised at the Wesleyan Methodist Church, Tow Law, June 19th, soon after the death of his 13-year-old brother George Hindmoor. Ten years later they had moved to Stable Row, Howden-le-Wear, County Durham, Charles supported his family employed as a colliery joiner, Charles William (22) and Richard (16) were both coal miners, Mary Ann had left the family home as had Richard in 1908 after his marriage to Elizabeth Calvert. Charles, his wife and Charles William in 1911 were living in 2 rooms at The Square, Howden-le-Wear, they were still employed at the colliery in the same capacity.

Charles William had served for a period with the 3rd Battalion D.l.I. and was a Special Reservist, as such when war was declared with Germany he enlisted August 31st 1914 and posted as Private 10194 to the 4th Battalion Durham Light Infantry. The 4th Battalion was at Barnard Castle but moved to the Tyne Defences once mobilised where the men were also trained for service overseas. The battalion moved to Killingworth in December 1914 then to Forest Hall in January 1915. Private Hindmoor was posted to the British Expeditionary Force and departed to France, March 23rd 1915 where he joined his regiment in the field having posted to the 2nd Battalion Durham Light Infantry at the conclusion of their participation at the Battle of Neuve Chapelle. The Durham Light Infantry left France and moved south to Belgium when the Germans attacked at the Second Battle of Ypres, April 22nd 1915 where they were joined by the newly arrived Territorial of the 50th Northumbrian Division. In the following months they sustained repeated attacks by the Germans.

Private 10194 Charles William Hindmoor was killed in action May 23rd 1915 and initially buried at Le Bizet Convent Military Cemetery, Ploegsteert.

After the Armistice at the request of the French and Belgian Governments smaller concentrations and isolated graves were brought into larger cemeteries. Le Bizet consisted of 88 burials from the United Kingdom and one from Canada who fell between October 1914-October 1915. Their remains were exhumed and brought into Strand Military Cemetery, 12.5 kilometres from Ypres, Belgium, October 20th 1920 and re-buried with military honours. Private 10194 Charles William Hindmoor Durham Light infantry is at rest grave X. I. 9. He was 37 years of age and single.

His father Charles received all monies due to him also his awards of the 1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal sent to him at The Square, Howden-le Wear, County Durham. He commissioned, at a cost of 1 shilling 9 pence, an addition inscription to be added to Private Hindmoor's military headstone, it reads, “At Rest.”

Although Richard Hindmoor would have been eligible to serve no record has been found.

Their mother Hannah Hindmoor nee Gray died in 1925 aged 78 years registered in the district of Bishop Auckland, details as regards Charles Hindmoor, unknown.
