TURSDALE

Hutchinson, G.H., Pte., 1917
In Tyne Cot Cemetery, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium, is the Commonwealth War Grave of 205490 Private George Henry Hutchinson serving with 1st/4th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment who died 26/12/1917.

Brenda McMahon has submitted the following:-

George was the son of George and Ann (nee Hepburn) of Thinford Street, Metal Bridge, Ferryhill. The couple married in 1897 at Sedgefield and went on to have 7 children although sadly 2 died.

George was born April 30th 1898 at Tursdale then baptised a few weeks later May 25th 1898 at Cornforth.

The 1901 census shows that George senior worked as a coal miner. The family unit comprised a daughter Elizabeth and also a boarder named Thomas Hepburn who was Ann’s brother.

By 1911 there have been further additions to the family ie Dorothy Gladys, Sydney Clough (who died 1927 aged 20 years) and William.

Ann’s brother, Thomas seems to have moved on by now but another 2 of her brothers are staying at the home namely Arthur and Ruben Hepburn.

Other children were born after the 1911 census was taken - Catherine Ann (born 1913) and Arthur (born 1915). Another child Robert (born 1917) is shown on the Ancestry website which has been added by a family member.

George enlisted into the army at Ferryhill, Durham and joined the.

He was killed in action on Boxing Day December 26th 1917.

His headstone bears the inscription: Until the day breaks and the shadows flee away

His father received a pension of 15/- per week as from July 16th 1918 as well as any monies due to George for his service.

Medals : British War Medal and Victory Medal.
