On the Vimy Memorial is the name of Captain Stanley Walker, Canadian Infantry who died on the 26/09/1916.

WALKER Stanley
He was born on 25/06/1890 in Pittingdon, Co Durham.

In 1902 he lived at 70 East Rainton, Fencehouses, Co Durham. His father William, was a blacksmith who died in 1916. His mother was Elizabeth Walker.

He was admitted to Durham Johnston School on 13/01/1903, aged 12.

On leaving school he emigrated to Canada where he became a school teacher.

While living at 123.18 Avenue East, Calgary, Stanley enlisted on the 15th May 1915 in Alberta and was posted into the 5th Btn Canadian Infantry, Saskatchewan Regiment.

He had previous military service in the CSCI and 4 months in the 59th Btn C.E.F.

He was promoted to Captain.

He died on the 29/09/1916 at Vimy Ridge, age 26.

At the time of his death Stanley’s widowed mother Elizabeth lived at Park House, Shincliffe Colliery, Co Durham.

His great nephew, also Stanley Walker, has submitted the Index to the names on the Vimy Memorial and the file entry regarding his death.

He is remembered in Durham on D47.025

He is also remembered on the Hillhurst Cricket Club memorial in Calgary, Canada.
