In Glageon Communal Cemetery Extension, Nord, France, is the Commonwealth War Grave of 248023 Private Ernest Gowland serving with the 1st/5th Battalion Durham Light Infantry who died 11/09/1918.

In Spennymoor Cemetery is a family headstone which reads:-

In loving memory of
the beloved husband of Elizabeth Gowland
of Middlestone Moor
who died Sept. 21st 1915
aged 60 years
Also Ernest
son of the above
who died of dysentery at Trelon
while a prisoner of war Sept. 11th 1918
aged 34 years

Until the day dawns

Ernest is not remembered on a local War Memorial.

He is remembered in The DLI Book of Remembrance page 240
