Kelly, S., Sgt., 1917
On the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France is the name of 1296 Sergeant Stephen Kelly serving with the 36th Battalion Australian Infantry, who died 22/07/1917.

Dorothy Hall has submitted the following:-

Stephen, born in 1892, in Newcastle upon Tyne was the son of James and Eleanor Kelly. In 1901 the family were at Ford Cottage, Lanchester and James was a Coachman. The family included Thomas (1885, a labourer in Coke yard) Catherine (1887), Eleanor (1889) Stephen, John (1894) Annie (1896) and Elizabeth (1898 born Lanchester). In 1911 they were at Lead Works Cottage, Wallsend. James was a horse keeper for Wallsend Colliery, Stephen, a carter for the Colliery and John an apprentice Fitter.

In November 1913 Stephen, a coke worker, emigrated to Australia, followed in July 1914 by James, a coachman, and Eleanor.

In May 1916 Stephen enlisted. He was 5 feet 7½ inches tall, had a dark complexion, blue eyes and brown hair. He was a Roman Catholic.

Stephen rose through the ranks eventually becoming a Sergeant. He was killed in action 22nd July 1917 and has no known grave. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.

His mother was living at Terrals Road, Hamilton West, New South Wales when he was killed.

Recipient of the British War Medal and Victory Medal.
