LANCHESTER

Ross, W., Cpl., 1918
On Pozieres Memorial, Somme, France, is the name of 28201 Corporal William Ross serving with the 22nd Battalion Durham Light Infantry who died 27/04/1918.

Ian Murray has submitted the following:-

William was born in Lanchester in 1894 to James and Jane Ann Ross, born in Lanchester and Witton Gilbert respectively. He was baptised at Lanchester Parish church 25th April 1894. In 1901 the family lived in Front Street, Lanchester and James was a coal miner hewer.

The 1911 census records the family living at Primrose Cottage, Lanchester, by which time William was 17 and an apprentice stone mason. His father had risen to be a Deputy Overman Underground and his younger brother, John Sidney was an apprentice blacksmith at the colliery.

William enlisted in Consett and served with the 22nd Battalion Durham Light Infantry.

He was killed in action on 27th April 1918. He has no known grave and is remembered on the memorial at Pozieres.
