Costello, W., Pte., 1916
In Bouzincourt Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France, is the Commonwealth War Grave of 68726 Private William Costello serving with the Royal Army Medical Corps who died 01/07/1916.

Ian Murray has submitted the following:-

William Costello was born in 1885, in Burnhope, to parents John and Margaret (born in Lambton and Burnhope respectively). In 1901 and 1911 they lived at 27 Westwood Row in Burnhope. John was a miner and by 1911, so was William.

William married Annie Renshaw Bolam on 24th April 1914 in St. Dominic R.C. Church in Newcastle upon Tyne and their daughter, Mary was born on 5 February 1915 in Burnhope. William enlisted into the Royal Army Medical Corps on the 20th September 1915 in Aldershot by which time he was living with his wife at 154, Jefferson Street, Newcastle.

William served with the 91st Field Ambulance Unit. He embarked at Southampton on 22nd November 1915 and disembarked at Le Havre the following day. He was killed in action on 1st July 1916 and is buried in Bouzincourt Communal Cemetery extension.

The Newcastle Journal 17/07/1916 reports William's death. William was well known as a cricketer in the Durham area and had been a long time vice-captain of Burnhope Cricket Club.

Awards: 1915 Star; British War Medal; Victory Medal.
