Smith, T.H., Pte., 1916
On the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France, is the name of 5584 Private Thomas Henry Smith, serving with the London Regiment (London Scottish) who died 01/07/1916.

Ian Murray has submitted the following:-

Thomas Henry, born in Burnhope in 1894 was the son of Edward and Frances Mary nee Carr Smith. Edward died in 1895 and from then on Thomas Henry lived with his grandparents, Thomas and Annie Smith at 2 West Wood Row, Burnhope. His aunt Annie was head teacher at Burnhope Council School.

At some point he attended Consett Technical Institute.

Thomas enlisted in London and served with the 1st/14th Battalion of the London Regiment (London Scottish). He died on the 1st of July 1916. He has no known grave and is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial.

Awards: British War Medal; Victory Medal.

Soldiers Effects records named Thomas Henry's mother as Frances Vincent. She had married John William Vincent in 1901 and was living at Tudhoe in 1911.

Thomas is remembered on a plaque in St. Nicholas Cathedral, Newcastle which commemorates members of the Durham and Newcastle Association of Change Ringers who gave their lives in The Great War: Thomas’ home tower being Lanchester All Saints. On July 1st 2016 a special peal in his memory was rung at Lanchester.
