Proposal for war memorial cottages
The Morpeth Herald 07/05/1920 reported:
"To commemorate the names of the men belonging to Broomhill and Chevington Drift who made the supreme sacrifice durin g the war, a public meeting has been decided to erect a number of cottages for their widows. A site, opposite the vicarage, has been granted by Lord Grey, and it is now a question of funds.
The colliery workers, together with the school staff and the co-operative society's employees, have willingly consented to contribute 6d weekly towards the cost of the memorial, but the committee feel there may be others willing tio support the noble work by subscribing.
The following subscriptions have already been received:- Mr. J. and W. Reay, £50; Mr. F.J. Hemsley, £40; Red Row Workmen's Club, £10; Chevington Drift Institute, £5; the Misses Kendal, £5; Mr. J. Chrisp, £1; Mr. W. Jeffrey, 10s; total £111.10s.
Subscriptions sent to the secretary, Mr. Wm. Dixon, North Row, South Broomhill, Acklington, will be gratefully acknowledged."
