BRANCEPETH

Plaque, Drummond, 1835, in St.Brandon's
A brass plaque formerly in St. Brandon's was:

Sacred to the Memory of Lt. William Russell Drummond
Of His Majesty’s Ship Satellite
Youngest son of General Sir Gordon Drummond GCB
And grandson of the late Wm. Russell Esqre.
Of Brancepeth Castle,
Who departed this life in Callao in South America
on the 31st January 1835 in the 23rd year of his age.
The premature death of this gallant and amiable officer
was occasioned by a wound from a musket shot in his leg
which rendered immediate amputation necessary on the 1st January 1835,
whilst engaged in the execution of his duty.
This monument has been erected by his afflicted parents
as a memorial of their love for a dutiful and affectionate son.

The plaque, made by A. Green, was placed by his parents on the wall in the chancel and was recorded by Surtees in 1919. It has now gone.
