We can offer sessions in your school and bring with us handling objects so students can touch and feel real objects from the time period you are studying.

Pupils can hold a piece of history in their hands with our interactive DLI Collection education sessions.
Learning with the DLI Collections
Children can get hands on with items of the DLI Collection through a series of classroom based workshops which take the story of the Durham Light Infantry into schools.
Some of the 15,000 items of the collection including: flags; medals; replica weapons and uniforms can be brought to your classroom or community group by our learning officers who will deliver a lesson, tied in to the National Curriculum.

Sessions offer a unique opportunity to explore contemporary sources and hold genuine objects once used by DLI soldiers and their families. Our workshops are available for both primary and secondary age school children and include sessions on the First World War and Second World War. Sessions can be tailored to your requirements and pupils ages and we can also offer assemblies.

Durhams' Duties - local history unit
Your pupils will take part in group explorations of the impact of war on families and communities. Follow the journey of six Durham people through the wars, with independent learning through handling, discussion, interpretation and role play.
Art and Poetry in the First World War
Art and poetry sessions offer a choice of four modules and include the study of art and poetry at the time, object handling, the chance to create your own museum and a remembrance feedback session.
Propaganda
Your pupils will take part in a whole group exploration of propaganda. Modules such as art and discussion can be used to understand how propaganda affects people's lives.
Real stories, Real Lives
Find out what life was like during the First World War following the story of individual soldiers including medical care, the effects of war and handle objects of the time. Your pupils can take part in a drill and explore the soldiers experiences of war.

We Will Remember Them

Remembering Soldiers of the Durham Light Infantry (DLI) during conflict

The Durham Light Infantry (DLI) Collection brings you a new Remembrance programme for 2020. Our Tommy character, Private Hugh McDonald can deliver two new activities via video link in your school.

Remembrance Assembly Engage your whole school or multiple classes through our new Remembrance Assembly, celebrating the strength of being together as a community to remember, looking at why and how we remember through the eyes and experiences of real DLI soldier stories from across conflicts and time.

Our Tommy character will engage students through a 20-minute film using local history and links to the SMSC curriculum to take your students on a journey of discovery about the importance and relevance of remembrance.

Curriculum Links:

* KS3: to encourage respect and tolerance through participation in a country wide anniversary, an integral part of the history curriculum.

* KS2: to begin to understand what we are remembering on Remembrance Day.

* KS1: to discover the lives of local people using real stories and events in living memory.

Each student will receive an individual remembrance token representing a DLI solider that they can keep, and we will provide you with the resources and ideas on how to explore this further.

Remembrance Workshop

Following on from the assembly or as a standalone element our Tommy character, Private Hugh McDonald will enter your classroom via multimedia as part of a 60-minute workshop combining digital, real objects and hands on activity resources. We will deliver a case of DLI objects for you to handle and use for the duration of your booking so you can explore the lives and stories of real DLI soldiers across time and different conflicts, their experiences and how we remember them. We will provide you with activity resources of puppy pads throughout the session to explore how and why people remember as well as how other countries and religions remember. Each activity also has an optional extension if you want to make the experience longer or more in depth. Activities include discussions, team-work, creative writing and art.

Curriculum links:

* KS3: to encourage respect and tolerance between different traditions and beliefs through participation in a country wide anniversary as an integral part of the history curriculum.

* KS2: to begin to understand what we are remembering on Remembrance Day, using local history links and sources, learning through artefacts and emotional engagement.

The workshop is charged on a daily rate and each session lasts 60 minutes with optional extensions. Book us for a day and run it as many times as you want!

*Ask us about our Risk Assessment for handling objects safely and Covid related issues. Delivery and pick up costs included in the price for County Durham schools, schools outside the county will have an additional delivery charge.

We offer workshops for groups of all ages and cover many different aspects of the war, including researching a local soldier and the Home Front. For more information, see our First World War workshops page.
Other school workshops
Visits to the Record Office are a great way to add depth and interest to any topic. As well as our First World War sessions, we offer workshop on a host of topics, including local history, World War 2 and suffragettes. Every visit is individual and tailored to your specific needs.
We are always willing to come out to schools with copies of our documents. These sessions often prove a good alternative where a visit to the Record Office is not practical.
Resources for schools
Our new resource packs, covering all five Key Stages, include lesson plans, whiteboard activities, and laminated copies of documents.
We also have a range of costumes and traditional toys to support activities in our school workshops.

Between 2011-19 War Memorials Trust had a youth focused Learning Programme to educate young people in schools and youth groups about their war memorial heritage. The aim was to ensure that the future custodians of the UK’s war memorials have the knowledge and skills necessary to help them take an active part in memorial conservation.
