Notes
1. Bishop Walcher was the first Norman Bishop and was murdered in Gateshead in 1080.
2. The Verger described a recent visit to the Cathedral by the man who, as a youth, had modelled for the chorister figure.
3. These two windows are from a series of seven designed by Hugh Easton.
4. A 1950s schoolgirl stab at the Latin translation is as follows. Any improvement will be welcomed:
a) Hujus ecclesiae e choristis qui non delixerunt animas suas usque ad mortem cantant quasi canticum novum ante sedem.
“These choristers from this church who loved not their lives unto the death now sing a new song before the throne”.
b) Altero in bello / fratrum exemplar / eodem studio secuti / idem suis / reliquerunt / desiderium.
“Also they are an example in battle to those who earnestly seek to follow”?? (Janet Brown)
