Notes
1. It is not clear whether this ever materialized. The evidence for such a memorial is in a single letter in the Tyne and Wear Archives dated 28th September (no year) from William Smith, 14 The Grove, Gosforth, Newcastle-on-Tyne3 which reads: “Dear Mr. Geoffrey, I am in receipt of your letter yesterday re the Roll of Honour, and I think it an excellent idea. The only names I can remember to be added to your list are Ed. J. Self (Store keeper) and the later Lancelot Slowther”. . . . Trusting Mrs. Newall and your self keep very well . . . .” which implies that “Mr. Geoffrey” is “Mr. Geoffrey Newall”.
2. The file on this memorial would probably not have been created had it not been that it names two men who worked for the firm. Any further information would be greatly appreciated.
