This tablet was erected
by
the inhabitants of the County Borough of Sunderland
to commemorate the services of the following Sunderland men
upon whom the Honorary freedom of the Borough was conferred in recognition of their
responding to the nations call by nobly, bravely and patriotically volunteering to assist the
regular forces in the defence of the Empire and with credit to themselves and
their native town taking part in the South African War
