Unveiled 22nd September 1921 by the Mayor, Cllr. W. Raine; dedicated by Bishop of Durham, Dr. Hensley Henson.

Memorial Description

Plaque 2 feet 2 inches high x 2 feet wide mounted on a pattress 3 feet 3 inches high x 2 feet 2 inches wide with rounded corners. There is a border pattern of swirling stems and leaves culminating in a fan shape in each corner.
At centre top is a ribbon bearing the name of the force, with a crown between two crossed standards below.
The names of those who died are in a bordered rectangle in the middle, the names in three columns. The names of those who served are in four columns divided by vertical lines.
Most of the lettering is in sans serif capitals with some red initials.

Brass on oak pattress.

This tablet / is erected by members of the above force / to perpetuate the memory of their comrades / who made the supreme sacrifice / and in honour of those who served their / King and Country / in the Great War 1914-1919.

Notes

1. Originally the plaque had been inserted into a carved oak frame of classical design with carved pillars at the sides. The dome at the top contained a badge set on a ribbon.
