Memorial Description

Plaque 198 cm x 115 cm comprised of three marble slabs with carved red sandstone borders. The sandstone outer frame is carved to form five arches with scalloped tops and is ornately patterned with leaves, ears of corn, thistles and Tudor roses.
The central panel is divided from the two outer ones by pilasters. The two outer panels are twice the width of the central one. The central panel contains the dedication and other details, and at the top is carved a simple small cross.
The names are listed in the two outer panels on two columns on each panel. The lettering is incised and blackened, using Roman capitals throughout the central panel, and upper and lower case Roman letters in the outer panels. The title "Roll of Honour" is repeated in both outer panels in Gothic script.

Names

Who commissioned

Col. Robert Norman Redmayne (of Prudhoe Castle)

Notes

1. The materials for the monument were chosen because an alabaster box contained the precious ointment used to anoint Our Lord, and white marble represents purity.

2. Bishop Ormsby, who dedicated the tablet, lost two sons before the war, three served and one was severely wounded. One of them had trained on HMS Britannia.

3. The motto “sans sang nulle victoriae” (without the shedding of blood there can be no victory?) seems to be a strange mixture of French and Latin)

4. Mr. Redmayne said he had given the plaque as a thankoffering for the victorious peace, and he was grateful to have been permitted to offer it.
