Memorial Description

Memorial Hall of two storeys, 40 yards x 20 yards, with single storey extension 11 yards x 20 yards, with sloping roof. The downstairs floor contains hall, stage, 2 changing rooms and toilets. Upstairs has a hall. The extension houses sports changing rooms.
Stone porch has the inscription carved in stone in elaborate capitals over the door.

2d was deducted from the local miners' wages each week.

Blyth Valley Borough Council, as a Community Centre.

Notes

1. The Hall was barely finished (1926) when it was used for the first time as a Soup Kitchen during the 1926 General Strike.

2. It is believed to be one of the few halls in Northumberland with a domed ceiling

3. In 2001, the hall was part of a Community Project which involved adding an extension and thorough restructuring inside, with room upstairs for IT instruction. Currently leased annually by the Community Association at a peppercorn rent, it hoped to obtain a 25 year lease in order to be able to obtain grants for the alterations

Morpeth Herald 11/04/1919 reports agreement; 25/02/1927 reports unveiling.

Newcastle Daily Chronicle 07/04/1919 reports proposal to build a hall, near the old pit “where a lamentable disaster occurred in 1862”.
