Memorial Description
Field Cannon, Russian two-wheeler, mounted on a circular two-step concrete plinth, badly worn. The cannon itself is badly corroded by spray and sea air, so that no inscription is visible on it. Nearby is a plaque telling the story.

A Trophy from Sebastopol
This cannon was captured from the Russian Army
at the Battle of Sebastopol
During the Crimean War (1854-56). In October, 1857
the then Secretary of State, Lord Panmure,
offered the cannon to Hartlepool Borough Council
who gratefully accepted it.
The cannon was transported from London on
the Steamship "Margaret" at a total cost of £2.19s 3d
and, after a year's delay, arrived at Hartlepool
in September 1858.

Notes
1. 18 shillings was paid for getting the gun to the ship Margaret for transportation; 18 shillings was paid to Mr. Doherty for cleaning the gun after it arrived; 18 shillings and three pence was paid to labourers for erecting the gun on site; 5 shillings was paid for a tompian, which prevented damp getting into the muzzle. The owner of the Margaret did not charge for the journey.

Stockton and Hartlepool Mercury 09/10/1858 carries a lively report of a discussion regarding the location of the gun, in which two councilors had a heated argument.
