Notes

1. This building was formerly an Orphanage known as St.Peter's Schools in the 1920s.

2. The names attached are not from the memorial itself. They have been taken from the lists compiled by the Guardians before the construction of the memorial.

3. It was agreed that the Guardians were prepared to contribute towards the costs of the memorial.

4. Several Poor Law Unions were involved in the collection of names for the memorial. These included Auckland Union; Carlisle; Darlington; Durham; Gateshead; Hartlepool; Hexham; Houghton-le-Spring; Newcastle upon Tyne; Sedgefield; South Shields; Sunderland; Tynemouth.

5. Among those to be invited to the dedication ceremony were girls from orphanages who had brothers named on the memorial.
