Memorial Description
Plaque on wall at base of tower measures 11½ inches high x 18½ inches (304mm x 381mm) wide. The letters are in Roman capitals.

Unto the honour and service of God.
The parapet and roof of this tower
were reconstructed in May 1870
in token of the cherished memory
of Oswald Carr, Captain in the Royal Artillery.
He was born and brought up at Hedgeley,
and he often expressed a hope that the tower
of the Parish Church might be
restored in its early likeness.
He fell in action in the Colony of New Zealand
on the 8th August, 1868, aged 31 years.
From a sum of military pay
then due to their most dear son,
the work has been effected by his Parents.
