Unveiled 12th June 2004 by Kevan Jones M.P. Service led by Rev. John Lintern.

Memorial Description

Stone slab 24 inches high x 34 inches inches wide x 4 inches thick (609mm x 863mm x 101mm), resting on a two stepped plinth. At bottom left is the badge of the Durham Police. The names are listed in two columns, with the dedication underneath. The details of the unveiling are on the riser of the top step. All lettering is incised and gilded using Roman lower case throughout.
The stone is set within a small garden.

Notes

1. It is thought that this action was part of the Baedecker Raids on Durham Cathedral.

2. As soon as the memorial was erected, a local man wanted to have it demolished, saying it isn’t a memorial since it wasn’t in a churchyard and didn’t carry names.

3. There was a 70th Anniversary Memorial Service held in the first week of May 2012. See below
