Unveiled July 1919 by Mr. J.M. Nicholson of Derwent Hill.

Memorial Description

Roll of Honour “handsomely framed”. “The design symbolises the banks of the Derwent,and illustrates the boathouse, an aeroplane, guns, tanks and other implements of war”. It bore the motto “Per aspera ad astre” (“Through hardship to the stars”).

Designed by Mr. W. Urwin, Colne, Lancashire, former manager of the drapery dept. of Consett Stores.

Notes

1. About 12 members had gained military honours; one person gained three and others had two.

2. Mr. Nicholson said “The whole of the names inscribed on this artistic tablet deserve to be read, revered and remembered as long as the Derwent flows.”
