1. St.Stephen’s Gardens is a memorial garden created around the memorial and contains the graves of eight men from the local area who were killed. See Every Name a Story

2. The church has changed its name to St.Aidan and St. Stephen (Parish of the Lawe).

3. “Only thirteen years ago the War was still raging, and eleven years ago the memorial was put up to the men of Wellington Street by the late Mr. Charles Rennoldson that their names might be known and honoured for ever. Yet there has recently been a suggestion by the member of the St. Stephen’s Church Council that the memorial should be removed as an “eyesore”. Some unemployed shipworkers living in or near Wellington Street saved the memorial by cleaning it without reward.

Newspaper cuttings, photos or archival material

South Shields Library, Local Studies Dept. original photograph.

A Corner of England, The Lawe Top, South Shields, Remembrance Day, November 11th 2001 is an excellent little booklet which lists all the dead, memories, life in the trenches, experiences in the Navy, Prisoner of war, a poem.

South Shields Gazette 03/09/1931 reports item in Note 3 above; 04/09/1931 carries a photo of the men involved with cleaning of the memorial.

Source of quotation:
“Their glory liveth evermore”. Not ascertained, but reminiscent of Apocrypha, Ecclesiasticus 44 “Their name liveth for evermore”.
