Booklet entitled “The German Raid on the Hartlepools, December 16th, 1914. The front cover depicts two ships and a lighthouse. The first two printed pages tell the story of the raids. The rest of the book is of single page photographs showing people involved and the damage done.

This historic booklet has been re-printed for the first time in 75 years, recording the day when, on Wednesday, 16th December, 1914, German battleships slyly crept out of the early morning mist to open fire on the slumbering inhabitants of Hartlepool and West Hartlepool. The first soldier – Private T. Jones – to lose his life on British soil at the outbreak of war, along with 118 other unsuspecting souls perished in the Hartlepools that cold, winter’s morning as a result of the cowardly raid. World War I had well and truly started.
