Low Spennymoor and Merrington Lane Working Men’s Club and Institute, Weardale Street, Spennymoor.

Present Location

The club was originally in Coulson Street, Low Spennymoor. The building was demolished and the club moved into the present premises.

Memorial Description

Roll of Honour behind glass in a frame. In the pediment is an elaborate gilded cross set on leaves raised in half relief, below which is a ribbon bearing the words “In Memoriam”. In all four corners is a raised gilded motif. The names are listed in two columns. Lettering is hand painted in gilt, the dedication is in Gothic script and Roman capitals, the names are in sans serif capitals.,

Benjamin Varvill.
Gunner 51000 15th Siege Bty. RGA. 7/11/1917, Nine Elms British Cemetery, Poperinghe. Age 31. Born Norwich, Cheshire. Occupation, miner. Husband of Sarah Elizabeth Varvill of 5 Kelloe Winning nr. Trimdon Grange. (Formerly of 215 Tudhoe Colliery). Name on this memorial is recorded as Varvel, there is no person recorded by that name on CWGC site, it is recorded as Varvill.
His name is also recorded on Spennymoor and Tudhoe Colliery War Memorials.


Joseph White
Pte. 13638 “A” Coy 6 Bn. EYR. 22/8/1915. Helles Memorial. Age 28. Son of Jane Ann and the late Joseph White of 171 Far Row, Tudhoe Colliery. Husband of Alice White of 111 Weardale Street and later 99 Upper Church Street, Low Spennymoor. His name is also recorded on Spennymoor War Memorial.


William Young.
Pte. 17105 8 Bn. EYR 14/7/1916 Thiepval Memorial.
His name is also recorded on Spennymoor and St. Andrew’s Church War Memorials.
