Memorial Description

Roll of Honour. It shows a panel of classical design with fluted columns at each side bearing the emblems of the United Kingdom (top left) rose; (top right) thistle; (bottom left) shamrock; (bottom right) daffodil. Behind are flags and draperies. At centre top is a ribbon bearing the words “Pro Rege et Patria” (“For God and Country”. Below this is an oval wreath containing the words “Ad Gloriam Dei” (“To the glory of God”). At centre bottom is a roaring lion shown standing on steps. Behind him is a medal depicting St. George slaying the dragon. On the central panel, the name of the church and the dedication are in elaborate letters. The names are listed in three columns, all in elaborate capitals; the names are continued on the steps below the lion.

Notes

1. “The photograph (of this memorial) came to me from a granddaughter of John Taylor; she does not know whether it was ever erected in the church”. (Patrick Brannen).

2. The granddaughter is Mrs. Annie Simmonds, her grandfather was one of the designers of the memorial.

3. The interesting thing about this memorial is that it only states “1914” as though it were created at the very beginning of the war which, so it was thought, was to have been over by Christmas.
