Campbell, T.G., Pte., 1916
On the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France is the name of 4307 Private Thomas George Campbell, serving with the Durham Light Infantry who died 03/11/1916.

Colin McMillan has provided the following:

Thomas George Campbell’s birth was registered in the Jul-Aug-Sep quarter of 1896. He was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne and in 1901 was the oldest child of 30 year old Bedlington born Thomas Campbell, a butcher, and 27 year old Elizabeth Mary Campbell who was born in Newcastle. By that time the family had moved to Newbiggin-by-the-Sea and had increased in size by the addition of 2 year old James and Margaret who was 1. They lived at Springfield Cottage. Both the younger children were born in Newbiggin.

By 1911 the family had moved to Morpeth and were living at 27 Alexandra Road. Elizabeth Mary Campbell was now a widow and head of the family and all of her children were living with her, including the four who were born since the previous census. By then Thomas George Campbell was 14 and worked as a baker’s errand boy. His brother James was 12 and a grocer’s errand boy. Margaret Elizabeth was 11, Mary Jane was 9, John was 6, Robert was 3 and the youngest child, William, was 4 months old.

Thomas George Campbell served with the 1st/6th Battalion Durham Light Infantry with the service number 4307 and died on 3rd November 1916.
