MORPETH

Brady, E., Gnr., 1918
In the Raillencourt Communal Cemetery Extension is the Commonwealth War Grave of 205956 Gunner Edward Brady, serving with the Royal Garrison Artillery who died 05/10/1918.

Colin McMillan has provided the following:

Edward Brady was born in or about 1883. He was the son of 56 year old Irish born Garrett Brady, who was a coal cartman who worked on his own account, and 46 year old Bridget who was also born in Ireland.

Edward, 18 in 1901 was the oldest child and like his father was a coal cartman. There were five other children: Garrett (jnr) was 16 and also a coal cartman, Michael was 14, Lily was 10, Beatrice was 8 and Bernard was 6. They were all born in Morpeth and their address in 1901 was 3 Staithes Lane, Morpeth.

The 1911 census document shows another Edward Brady living with the Burns family at 9 Lawsons Buildings, Morpeth. He, too, is in the mining industry as a miner hewer but his date of birth of 1885 does not match and it cannot be confirmed that the two men are one and the same.

However, the 1883 Brady served with the Royal Garrison Artillery as 205956 Gunner Brady, E. who died on 5th October 1918 in the France and Flanders Western European Theatre of War.

Edward Brady is remembered in Morpeth on M17.01, M17.09, M17.17, M17.29 and M17.31
