Dunn, A., Pte., 1917
On the Tyne Cot Memorial, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium, is the name of 15413 Private Andrew Dunn, serving with the 12th/13th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, who died 04/10/1917.

Colin McMillan has provided the following:

Andrew Dunn was born in or about 1882 in Bedlington.

In 1911, when aged 28, he worked as a colliery fireman. He was married to 23 year old Margaret Dunn who was born in Spital Tongues, Newcastle, and in the six years of their marriage had had four children of whom only two survived and were living with them at the time. They were 4 year old Eleanor Dunn and 4 month old William Clark Dunn. The family address was 146 Bothal Terrace, Pegswood Colliery.

The census document shows that also living with them were Andrew’s mother-in-law, 58 year old widow Annie Isabella Rand, 19 year old brother-in-law Charles Mattreass Rand and “relative” 17 year old Isabella Ramsay.

Morpeth Herald 09/11/1917 carries a brief obituary:

MORPETH SOLDIER’S DEATH
Mrs Dunn, 7 Reid Street, Middle Greens, Morpeth, has received the following letter from Captain G. White, N.F.:- “I have been unable to write to you before to tell you how sorry we all were to lose Private [Andrew] Dunn, who was killed by a shell on October 4th during an attack. Your husband died instantly.

“I feel the loss very much, as he had been with me as a runner for a long time, and had done splendid work on many occasions. It is, I know, a great loss to you, as I know that he was often thinking of you.

“He was a splendid soldier, always smart and cheerful under trying circumstances, and one of the bravest runners we have had. He will be missed by all ranks”.

Morpeth Herald 16/11/1917 carries the following:

ROLL OF HONOUR
DUNN.- Killed in action on Oct. 4th, 1917, Pte. Andrew Dunn (No.15413), N.F., late of Pegswood.- (Will ever be remembered by his loving brother Tom, sister-in-law Jennie, and little nephew Bobbie.)

Morpeth Herald 30/11/1917 carries the following:

Private Andrew Dunn, 35 years of age, whose parents reside at 71˝ Poplar Street, Hirst, has been killed in action.

Andrew Dunn is remembered at Morpeth on M17.01 and M17.09 and at Ashington on A17.43
