Mitchinson, J.M., Sgt., 1944

In Veel Churchyard, Meuse, France, is the Commonwealth War Grave of 1517301 Sergeant Wireless Operator, Air gunner Joseph Martin Mitchinson, serving with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve who died 13/07/1944.

Joseph Martin Mitchinson was the son of Mr and Mrs J. Mitchinson of Salop House, Morpeth. He had been previously reported missing.

Simon Glancey has submitted the following:

Sgt. Mitchinson was a crew member of Avro Lancaster III PA999 PM-S of 103 Squadron, which was lost on a mission to bomb railway targets at Revigny. The Lancaster was shot down by a Luftwaffe night-fighter, and crashed near Veel with the loss of six of the seven crew.

Also killed in the same incident was P/Off. J.A. Harrison.
