MORPETH

O'Brien, E., Gnr., 1916
In Dantzig Alley British Cemetery, Mametz, Somme, France, is the Commonwealth War Grave of 90216 Gunner Edward O'Brien, serving with the 13th Battery 51st Brigade Royal Field Artillery, who died 08/07/1916.

Morpeth Herald 04/08/1916 carries a brief obituary:

Mrs O'Brien, West Greens, Morpeth, has received the following letter:- “I am very sorry to have to inform you of the death of your son Ned. He was killed outright by a shell that burst in the gun pit. It was on the 8th of July, and we buried him the same night in a cemetery near the guns. I am requested by the officers and NCO's and men to express their deepest sympathy to you in this sad bereavement. It is hardly necessary for me to say that he was a friend to everybody, and his valuable services will be much missed. The only consolation we have is to know he died doing his duty. He was a good chum of mine, and I miss him very much. Again expressing my deepest sympathy.- I remain, yours-Bombr. J. Foster.”

He is remembered at Morpeth on M17.01 M17.02 M17.09 and M17.29
