Joseph was the son of Thomas and Isabella Evans Cromarty nee Elsdon, of Hendon, Sunderland.

His Whitley Bay burial record gives this information:

Died: 22.12.44
Buried: 28.12.44

According to the Scouts Roll of Honour for 1939-45, Joseph was associated with the 5th Whitley Bay (St. George's) Group of Scouts. They say he was killed in a flying accident in Canada.
