The Death of Sergt. A. Robson

Mr and Mrs W. Robson, of Whitley Bay have received the following letter relating to the death of their son in action:-

"8th June 1918
"Dear Mrs Robson,
It is my painful duty to inform you of the death of your son Acting Sergeant.-Major Amos Robson, M.M.

During recent operations your son displayed great bravery in getting two guns into action, a most gallant act under the circumstances, for which, had he lived, he would have been rewarded with a high distinction.

Unfortunately, the gun he was manning was destroyed by a premature explosion which killed four more beside himself.

I feel his loss very deeply. He was an excellent soldier, willing, brave, and always cheerful. He won the Military Medal two months ago.

Please accept my sincere sympathy for your bereavement.

Believe me, yours sincerely
C. A. Shock."

Amos Robson was the son of Mr W. Robson, a Whitley Bay postman of twenty year's standing'

Amos's parents, William Joshua Robson and Ann Lennox, were married in the Tynemouth registration district at a non-Anglican venue in 1887. William was recorded as a 'Letter Carver'. They lived at Margaret Road, Whitley Bay, Northumberland.

Amos was born on 16th March 1891 according to his baptism record at St Paul, Whitley Bay. The baptism took place on his first birthday on 16 March 1892.

It is thought that Amos Robson had been promoted to full Sergeant Major by the time of his death.

Amos Robson is remembered at Whitley Bay on W84.01 and on W84.02
